A woman’s warning to others about a fraud has gone viral online after she detailed how she had been “scammed out of every penny”.
Emmeline Hartley posted her story on Twitter about falling victim to a sophisticated “push payment fraud” by a scammer posing as Barclay’s anti-fraud unit.
Hartley, 28, explained that she first received a text message purporting to be from Royal Mail asking for her to pay a £2.99 “postage fee”, which she thought was credible because it was her birthday and she was expecting some packages. She clicked on the link in the text to make the payment and added some personal details.
Two days later she was called by someone claiming to be from Barclay’s fraud unit, using a telephone number
