Walmart expanding in-home delivery service

As part of its plans to expand its in-home delivery service, US retail giant Walmart is hiring 3,000 home delivery drivers.

The in-home delivery service allows drivers to enter a customer’s home while they are out. They use a one-time passcode on the garage or front door to access the home, and can for instance place chilled items in the fridge and frozen items in the freezer as the customer requests.

Currently, Walmart has just 100 drivers and offers the service to 6 million homes but with the 3,000 drivers will be able to reach up to 30 million homes across the US.

As with many other supermarket chains, Walmart has seen a boom in demand for home delivery thanks to the pandemic making customers feel uncomfortable about visiting stores in person.

Walmart has experimented with a range of home delivery options over the years yet it appears the recent pilot of in-home delivery has been a sufficient success for it to pursue this as a long term offering.
