The Bay: A Blueprint for Recovery is hosting The Bay Beach Clean on Saturday, January 7, up until 3pm at Biggar Bank.
A spokesman for the event said: “Get the year off to a great start for yourself and our oceans with a beach clean. Equipment is provided and there are prizes to be won.
“Marine litter is a major threat to the animals that live in our oceans. From dolphins getting entangled in fishing gear to seabirds eating plastic, rubbish in the seas is a huge problem for marine life. By removing litter from the beach, we can save marine animals and protect our seas.
“We will also be recording the fishing gear in our oceans as part of a citizen science survey to monitor ‘ghost gear’ (abandoned fishing gear). Prizes will be given for the most litter collected, the largest item of litter, and the most bizarre item found! Gloves, bags, and litter pickers will be available but if you have your own, please bring them.
“There will be a portable rockpool in the Round House so you can meet some of the animals you’re helping with the beach clean.”
