We don’t know if Meghan Markle will visit ill father, says royal author

If Meghan Markle is a compassionate person she will visit her father after his stroke, says royal biographer Tom Bower – who claims the Duchess is not in contact with Thomas Markle

  • Meghan Markle’s father Thomas has been hospitalised after a stroke
  • Tom Bower appeared on GMB today to discuss whether Meghan will visit him
  • The royal author said the Duchess has not yet spoken to her father
  • However, he said if she is compassionate, she will visit and ‘give him comfort’

Meghan Markle should visit her father Thomas who has been hospitalised with a stroke, but is not currently in contact with him, a royal expert has claimed.

Tom Bower, an investigative journalist who is currently working on a biography of the Duchess, 40, told Good Morning Britain today that he spoke to Thomas Markle over the weekend.

Mr Markle, 77, a former TV lighting director, is reportedly in a clinic in Chula Vista, California, a few hours’ drive away from the Montecito home Meghan shares with husband Harry, 37, and their two children Archie, three, and Lilibet, 11 months.

Mr Bower told hosts Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid that it is unknown whether Meghan will make the trip to see her father, who has reportedly been left unable to speak following the stroke.

He said: ‘If we knew what she was going to do, that would be terrific. But what we do know is that Meghan has always said that she’s a very compassionate person.

‘And if compassion was at all necessary right now, it would mean she would go to her father’s bedside, about two and a half hours’ drive south of where she lives, and give him some comfort and reassurance.  We wait to see what happens.’

He added: ‘We know she hasn’t [made any contact]. There hasn’t been any contact since just before the wedding day – other than the famous letter.’

Discussing the senior Markle’s feelings about the rift between him and Meghan, Mr Bower said: ‘He’s very upset…because of course, he was a very loving father to Megan and supported her throughout her childhood when her mother wasn’t there. And he paid for her student fees too.

‘He is very upset that he hasn’t been able to see his grandchildren. ‘

Mr Bower also discussed Mr Markle’s plans to come to London for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June .

‘Although he told me that he was coming to see the Queen, I think really he was also hoping to see Megan and to see his grandchildren,’ he said.

Mr Bower added that if Mr Markle had made it to the UK, his appearance may ‘have somewhat dominated the news outlets’, suggesting that his absence may allow for more coverage of the event itself.

A video, which was shared by US gossip outlet TMZ showed him on a stretcher flanked by paramedics, with a pale face and one hand on his chest.

Mr Markle’s daughter Samantha, 57, told MailOnline: ‘My father is recovering in hospital. We ask for privacy for the family, for his health and wellbeing. He just needs peace and rest.

‘Godspeed. We are praying. He just needs some rest.’
