Wetherspoons gets nod to transform historic UK building into pub

Wetherspoons is set to open a new establishment in a Somerset city after securing planning permission to transform a historic building. The new pub on George Street, previously occupied by Revolution, will be the second Wetherspoons pub in Bath, joining the King of Wessex on James Street West.

Eddie Gershon, a spokesperson for Wetherspoons, said: “We are delighted that the plans for our new pub in Bath have been approved. At present there are no on site or opening dates.”

The forthcoming venue, aptly named “the Old Post Office,” retains its moniker from the building’s original purpose and was designed in the mid-18th century by John Wood the Younger, famed for his work on the Royal Crescent.

The grade II listed building has received consent for modifications to become a pub, which includes relocating the gents toilets upstairs and unblocking three windows that were previously covered over internally.

Bath and North East Somerset Council has also agreed to extend the building’s operating hours, allowing it to open at seven am to serve breakfast, an hour before the King of Wessex commences business.

Wetherspoons argued in their application that the extended hours would not adversely affect the area, stating: “Given that the premises has operated for a number of years within a sensitive time period and had no complaints or issues, it is considered that there would be no negative impact from increasing the hours of opening to [seven am].”, reports Somerset Live.
