What a frock-star! Sam Smith stuns Royal Albert Hall audience as 32-year-old performs live on stage while donning black polka dot suit before switching into outlandish red velour gown

It was a hotly anticipated performance – not just for what songs Sam Smith would perform, but also for what outlandish outfit they would wear.

But in the end, the 32-year-old singer opted for comparatively understated attire for the sell-out performance at the Proms.

Recent live performances have seen the singer, who announced they were non-binary in 2019, dance in a corset and bare their bottom, leading traditionalists to worry about the gig at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Among the singer’s most-talked about outfits has been an all-black balloon-like latex suit by Harri at the 2023 Brit Awards.

Having given assurances there would be no shocks, Smith opened the show in a black polka dot, double-breasted suit by Vivienne Westwood’s creative director Andreas Kronthaler, teamed with a long bow tie and a plain white shirt underneath.

Smith barely stopped smiling as they joined the BBC Concert Orchestra on Friday night for what was billed as a retrospective look at the singer’s seminal 2014 debut solo album, In The Lonely Hour.

Among the tracks performed was Lay Me Down. The singer switched to a Vivienne Westwood custom-made red velour floor-length gown with matching silk gloves for the second half – in what was described as ‘all very Judy Garland.’

A friend said: ‘It was all very appropriate and Sam felt so privileged and happy to be asked. It was lovely, the audience were up singing along and cheering.’
