‘What’s happening in Stockport is a blueprint for the whole country’

Major changes are taking place in the town centre – with more on the way.

Huge changes could soon be on the way to Stockport as a regeneration project in the town centre looks to expand, bringing new homes, a school, and a health hub.

A £1bn scheme in the borough’s biggest urban centre has so far focused on the west of the town.

This work, led by the council and Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC), has brought the opening of Stockport transport interchange, a business district around the train station known as Stockport Exchange, and the building of new apartments.

But a massive expansion is being planned to extend the boundary of work across the whole of Stockport town centre.

The Stockport MDC said a letter has been sent by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to the government asking for approval of the expanded project.

This is part of the formal process to widen the scope of the work.

If granted as expected, it would open the door for work to begin on the east of the A6.

Stockport council leader Mark Roberts welcomed the step, describing the changes taking place in Stockport as a ‘UK-leading’ regeneration scheme.

He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “The MDC has already accomplished transformative change in the west of the town centre – from better transport links and vibrant green spaces to thousands of new homes, jobs and major investment – so it’s only right to extend this success to the east.

“Parliamentary approval would unlock inclusive growth across the entire town centre, accelerating the delivery of 8,000 much-needed homes, a new school and a modern health hub.

“It brings our vision closer to reality for a thriving town centre that benefits everyone in the borough.

“I’d like to thank Mayor Burnham for his continued support and partnership in helping us take this next step.

“We’re proud that the success of our model is recognised across Greater Manchester and the UK as a blueprint for urban living and shows what’s possible when partners, investment and ambition come together.”

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham previously said: “The change that Stockport has seen in recent years is plain to see – and the town keeps going from strength to strength. It is a pioneer of the Mayoral Development Corporation model, offering a blueprint for urban regeneration that the whole country can look to.

“Now we’re ready to see Stockport’s game-changing MDC expand across the whole town centre, delivering more sustainable homes and public space for the whole community.”
