When benefits will be paid over Platinum Jubilee long weekend

The UK is marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with an extra long bank holiday, set to take place on Thursday 2 June and Friday 3 June.

Plenty has been planned to mark the long weekend, with parades, concerts and fly pasts staggered across the Jubilee.

As with every bank holiday – banks will be shut for the duration of the time off – and so benefits will be processed differently over this period. Those on universal credit will receive their benefits at a slightly different date than expected this month.

When will I get my Universal credit?

If you get your benefits – including universal credit, child tax credits, working tax credits, child benefit, employment support allowance (ESA), personal independence payments (PIP), jobseeker’s allowance (JSA), carer’s allowance, attendance allowance and pension credits – between 2 June and 5 June, then you should get your payments early this weekend.

Changes to universal credit this year

Universal credit went up by 3.1 per cent in April 2022, as announced by the Department for Work and Pensions last year, along with other benefits and tax credits, including the state pension.

The increases are as follows:

  • For people who are single and aged under 25, the standard allowance will rise from £257.33 to £265.31.
  • For people who are single and aged 25 or over, the standard allowance will rise from £324.84 to £334.91.
  • For couples both aged under 25, the standard allowance will rise from £403.93 to £416.45.
  • For joint claimants where one or both are aged 25 or over, the standard allowance will rise from £509.91 to £525.72.
  • For people with a first child born before 6 April, 2017, the extra amount will rise from £282.50 to £290.
  • For people with a child born on or after 6 April, 2017, or second child and subsequent child, the extra amount will go up from £237.08 to £244.58.
  • For people with a disabled child, the lower-rate addition payment will increase from £128.89 to £132.89 and the higher rate from £402.41 to £414.88.
  • For people with a limited capability to work, the extra amount will go up from £128.89 to £132.89
  • For people with a limited capability for work or work-related activity, the extra amount will rise from £343.63 to £354.28
  • People who care for someone who is severely disabled for at least 35 hours a week will see a rise from £163.73 to £168.81.

Will post be delivered on the bank holiday?

Royal Mail post will not be delivered over the Jubilee bank holiday.

The Royal Mail explains: “We deliver and collect your mail on most days of the year, including Saturdays. However, we don’t usually deliver or collect on bank and public holidays.”

You can see a full calendar of the dates that post is affected by public holidays on the Royal Mail website here.

This also means that many Post Offices will close, although local branches, such as those inside convenience stores, may still be open, albeit with reduced hours.

You can use the Royal Mail’s branch finder to check for up-to-date information about your local Post Office, or the information you need to contact it directly.
