Why Royal Mail post workers sometimes write a ‘P’ on your letters

Ever noticed a letter ‘P’ scribbled on the envelope of the post you receive and wondered what it means?

If so, you’re not the only one in Britain, as a curious post on Reddit revealed.

“Can anybody tell me why all my letters in the last few days had had a ‘P’ symbol written on them,” was asked in a post on the R/CasualUK subreddit page.

Among the replies were jokes, including one suggesting the P stands for a rude five-letter word and is added to post for those who do not tip at Christmas.

But several who responded to say they work as posties said the reason is practical and helps them work efficiently, as the Daily Star reports.

They say the P usually means that they are delivering a parcel or package to the same address.

“You had a packet/parcel. Stops us from forgetting about it,” replied one.

Another added: “It’s the postie’s way of reminding themselves that when they come to post your letter there’s also a parcel for you.”

Sometimes a number is included too to indicate there is a parcel to deliver to one of your near neighbours.

“That’s so they don’t post your letter then find out halfway down the street they forgot to knock and give you your parcel,” said one reply.

“Or sometimes they’ll write P10 or something on the previous letter – that lets them know they have a parcel for next door (number 10) but no letter.”
