Why Scots may no longer be able to have a low-level letterbox

Scotland is set to become the first country in the UK to introduce a ban on low-level letterboxes in the front doors of new homes to protect postal workers from back pain and dangerous dogs.

A ban was introduced in Ireland in 2001 but the Westminster and devolved governments have been slow to enact similar measures even though action gained all-party support as far back as 2019.

The Scottish government says it is exploring options on implementing a ban after the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) warned that thousands of post delivery workers were still being affected by back pain every year, partly because of the location of letterboxes. Low-level boxes also make it easier for dogs to attack posties.

The CWU urged ministers on Thursday
