Will the post office be open in lockdown? Opening times and rules during coronavirus lockdown 2

Non-essential businesses will be forced to close throughout November as part of the second national coronavirus lockdown.

From Thursday (November 5), most shops, bars and restaurants will shut down until December 2, in an effort to stem the spread of Covid-19 across England.

The hastily made rules have left many people asking whether key services, including post offices, will remain open.

This comes after some businesses which may be deemed by some as essential, such as gyms, have been forced to close, causing uproar in some areas.

A list of essential businesses that will be allowed to stay open has now been released by the government.

Will the post office be open in lockdown?

The government has confirmed that post offices will remain open throughout November.

Post offices join a list of other businesses that are exempt from the coronavirus lockdown, though they will have to follow Covid-19 secure guidelines regarding face masks and social distancing.

Other businesses that will stay open are:

  • Essential retail (supermarkets/garden centres/off licenses)
  • Petrol stations, car repair and MOT services
  • Banks and building societies
  • Funeral directors
  • Laundrettes and dry cleaners
  • Medical and dental services
  • Vets and pet shops
  • Agriculture supply stores
  • Storage and distribution facilities
  • Car parks, public toilets and motorway service areas
  • Outdoor playgrounds

Other public services like job centres, courts and recycling centres will also remain open.

Post office opening times and rules

Post offices will be following their usual opening times throughout November – you should check the hours at your branch.

Anyone visiting a post office must wear a face covering and observe social distancing, in line with national coronavirus safety guidelines.

If you don’t want to visit in person, Royal Mail has recently launched a new parcel collect service, which means your mail can be collected from your doorstep at a cost of 72p per parcel.
