Winwick nine-year-old has been helping grit paths during icy weather

While many have wanted to stay wrapped up warm in bed, Evan Robinson has spent his mornings out braving the ice and snow, gritting the pathways around Winwick to help others.

A familiar face within the community, the nine-year-old has been spotted with his dad Ian Robinson in their gritting wagon, ensuring that St Oswald’s Church, the car park, and even local driveways are safe during the frosty mornings.

Evan’s mum, Sarah Robinson, spoke proudly of her son’s “dedication to helping others”.

“It stems from his boundless energy and a big heart for his community,” she explained.

“His father, whose friend operates the Gritting and Snowplough Maintenance service, has made it a family affair, teaching Evan the importance of lending a helping hand.”

Locals praised the Oakwood Primary pupil, referring to his kind act as “inspiring” as well as it being uplifting to see “someone his age taking pride in his community”.

Commenting on his son’s participation in gritting the roads in their local area, dad Ian added: “Evan loves being out in the gritters with me. He’s always eager to jump out and get to work, whether it’s spreading grit or checking in with the neighbours. His energy is contagious, and he’s really proud to be part of keeping our community safe.”

And this is not his first rodeo, as the youngster set out volunteering to help grit the paths back in 2020 for Royal Mail – at the young age of five.

Meanwhile, his mum Sarah also shared how her son has begun to help out with the family business, lending a helping hand at his dad’s scaffolding yard Diamond Scaffolding in Winwick.

“Evan has taken to assisting with small tasks, learning the ropes under his father’s guidance,” she added.

Whether it’s organizing tools, sweeping up, or just being a cheerful presence,” his dad told. “It’s amazing to see how hardworking he is, even at his age.”
