Woman knew something was ‘odd’ when she only got two birthday cards

Residents on two south Liverpool streets claim they haven’t had post in weeks resulting in them missing important information like hospital appointments and ballot papers.

The ECHO has been approached by residents from a number of south Liverpool streets who claim they have not had regular post since the middle of September. They said this meant they have missed important letters including birthday messages, bank bills and medical results.

Two residents – who live on Brodie Avenue and Meredale Road – said they have gone to their local sorting office on Pitville Road, Mossley Hill, and been told the delays are due to staffing issues. But a spokesperson for the Royal Mail today told the ECHO no routes are experiencing delays of four weeks and posties are delivering to those who have mail.

One local resident, who lives on Brodie Avenue, told the ECHO: “It’s been over a month now. The last time we received post properly was September 11. It was my birthday recently and I normally get quite a few cards.

“I only had two this year which I thought was quite odd. I said to my husband ‘I don’t think we’ve had post in a while’. I went to the local sorting office on Pitville Road and staff there told me they were really sorry we had not had the post but they were massively understaffed.

“They said they were a lot of staff down including our postman who was off. They said they were trying to get through it as quickly as possible but I could see at least four big bags of mail still there waiting to be sorted.”

The woman, who did not want to be named due to her job working on the railways, told the ECHO she has gone back to the sorting office on several occasions but nothing seems to have changed. She added post dated back to September 10 has arrived but nothing recent.

She said since her street’s post has stopped being delivered she has not received two strike ballot papers, cards which contain gift vouchers and money, while her husband is still waiting for test results from the hospital.

She said her elderly neighbours are particularly concerned – and added: “At the moment it’s a just a topic of conversation on our road, but thousands of people could be impacted by this. I think it needs to be highlighted.”

The ECHO was also approached by a man who lives on Meredale Road, Mossley Hill. He claimed to have not received a post delivery for over a month. He claimed when he visited the sorting office on Pitville Road, he was informed the Royal Mail had “stopped delivering mail” to his road.

He also claimed Royal Mail are prioritising parcel deliveries because “they make money on these deliveries”. He added due to not having the post delayed on time he has had to pay extra on his credit card because he never received the bill on time.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail told the ECHO: “We are committed to restoring our quality of service to our customers. We have plans in place and dedicated teams responsible for improving deliveries throughout Liverpool and at our delivery offices nationwide.

“Over the last six weeks we have recruited around 3,000 postmen and women and are continuing to recruit 500 permanent positions a week in delivery. To support the health of our employees and assist them in their return to work, we have introduced a wellbeing programme which provides colleagues with free, confidential, and independent healthcare support, including unlimited 24/7 access to an online GP.

“In the lead up to Christmas, we are taking on 16,000 temporary workers, more vehicles and additional parcel sorting sites to handle double the normal volume of parcels we expect over the period. These actions plus others are already making a difference in some areas and we are confident that they will continue to improve quality of service for our customers.”
