A WORLD-FAMOUS attraction in York steams up for two major milestones – with a royal visit and a major reveal.

The Princess Royal is due to visit the National Railway Museum on Leeman Road on Thursday as it celebrates its 50th anniversary with a special reception.

The NRM is also unveiling the newly-renovated Station Hall following an £11m transformation. The Grade-II listed Station Hall will officially reopen to the public on Friday 26 September in time for the iconic attraction’s golden anniversary celebrations at the weekend.

Since opening on 27 September 1975 as the first national museum outside London, the NRM has welcomed almost 40 million visitors to date and has been instrumental in preserving Britain’s railway heritage.

Home to famous vehicles such as Mallard and Flying Scotsman, it has the largest collection of railway objects in the world and is the most visited free attraction in the region. It boasts more than 260 locomotives and rolling stock, thousands of railway objects, and more than 1.75 million documents, photographs and artwork in its archives.
