World’s oldest man dies at age 112

(Gray News) – The world’s oldest man has died.

On Tuesday, Guinness World Records announced the passing of John Tinniswood, who lived to be a staggering 112 years old.

Tinniswood’s family said he died Monday at a care home in Southport, England, and spent his last day “surrounded by music and love.”

Tinniswood took the title of world’s oldest man by Guinness World Records on April 5, 2024.

He was born in Liverpool on Aug. 26, 1912 – the same year the Titanic sank.

From ages 100-110, he received a birthday card every year from Queen Elizabeth II, who was almost 14 years younger than him.

He previously said the secret to his long life was “just luck,” saying, “You either live long or you live short, and you can’t do much about it.”

Tinniswood previously said he didn’t credit any lifestyle choices or diets to his longevity. He said he just ate what was given to him at his care home, just like everyone else.

He enjoyed his favorite meal – fish and chips – every Friday.

According to Guinness World Records, Tinniswood met his wife during World War II and married her in 1942. They have one daughter, who was born in 1943.

Tinniswood retired in 1972, and his wife died in 1986. He previously had careers in the Royal Mail service and as an accountant for Shell and BP.

He previously said the world is always changing, but he believed it is changing for the better.

“It’s a sort of ongoing experience … it’s getting a little better but not all that much yet. It’s going the right way,” he said back in April.

Tinniswood gave advice for younger generations, telling Guinness World Records, “Always do the best you can, whether you’re learning something or whether you’re teaching someone. Give it all you’ve got. Otherwise, it’s not worth bothering with.”

Tinniswood is survived by his daughter, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The oldest man to ever live was Jiroemon Kimura from Japan, who died in 2013 at age 116 years and 54 days.
