Worthing postbox could be the last in the UK approved by the Queen

The West Durrington postbox was installed last year

A Worthing postbox could be the last one in the country approved by the Queen, according to a local councillor.

Northbrook Councillor Russ Cochran discovered the West Durrington postbox and pointed out that it could be the last of its kind following its installation last year as “Royal Mail don’t tend to take them out”. Queen Elizabeth II’s death last Thursday means that alongside changing stamps and banknotes, new post boxes installed will be inscribed with Charles’ cypher “CIIIR” rather than “EIIR”.

Cochran admitted he was “unashamedly taking credit” for the postbox, as he asked whether it was “the last EIIR postbox approved and installed in the borough, if not the county? If not the land?

“You could say I spent a few hours pestering the right people, gaining support and approval from Royal Mail, [the] council and developers.” He quipped.

“It was something severely lacking on the new West Durrington estate and I had it initiated when elected last year”.

Postboxes across the UK bear the names of the reigning monarch at the point of their installation, with some older additions even including names such as George V.
