YouTube star tells how he was shunted half a mile by Royal Mail truck then saved by Ellie Goulding

YouTube star Jack Joy has spoken for the first time about the terrifying moment his car was shunted half-a-mile down a busy dual carriageway before he was rescued by the pop star Ellie Goulding.

Incredible footage emerged of his Golf GTi being pushed along the A40 in west London with Joy still at the wheel.

The Royal Mail driver was oblivious to the fact the small car was caught on his bumper until Goulding’s chauffeur leaned on the horn of his Range Rover and frantically waved at him to stop.

The singer then leapt out to make sure Joy was alright.

Joy, who co-presents the hit podcast Car Throttle, told how he had no idea his rescuer was the famous singer.

Recalling the incident, which went viral after the footage was posted online, he said: ‘Some of you may know, some of you may not, that my GTi was written off,’ he says.

‘It happened over Greenford flyover, a two-lane dual-carriageway. I was in the left, the lorry came over from the right, span me round, pushed me.

In the footage, Joy is seen with his arm casually cocked on the steering wheel as the truck finally comes to a stop, before Goulding bends into the car to make sure he is ok.

Laughing as he talked about the singer Joy said: ‘What the hell?! Then that happened. I didn’t even realise until I read it on the Daily Mail.’

The incident last December prompted rumours among the show’s 2.6 million subscribers that the whole thing was a set up.

But in this latest episode, in which the trio set about finding Joy a new car for £200, he said: ‘Thank you for thinking we could set something like this up but as we have access to so many crap cars why would we do that in mine?’

He added: ‘I wouldn’t recommend it, quite scary, but the thing is when you are being pushed for so long, you didn’t get used to it but you absorb it and realise where you are.

‘I was concentrating, just trying not to fill my pants full of s++t.’

The incident happened on a busy Monday morning on the three-lane A40 near Perivale as the Royal Mail truck moved from the middle to the slow lane.

Several road users, including Goulding, blasted their horns at the truck which eventually came to a halt by a slip road.

The driver is then seen winding down his window and innocently asking, ‘What’s wrong?’ before another driver responds with, ‘What the f*** are you doing man?’

Emerging from his cab, the Royal Mail driver said: ‘I didn’t see him, I honestly didn’t see him,’ before checking on Jack and admitting it was his fault and offering his details.

Meanwhile Goulding is heard criticising another motorist for filming the incident, to which he replies that ‘it’s evidence’.

The ‘How long will I love you’ singer later took to Instagram to tell of her role in the drama:

‘I’m the one in the car checking if this guy was OK – craziest thing I’ve ever seen on the road.

‘Everyone was driving past but my driver Guy stopped. Drive safe and look out for others everyone!!’

Ellie Goulding posted the incident on her social media

'I'm the one in the car checking if this guy was ok,' she said, adding that the collision was 'the craziest thing I've ever seen on the road'

Goulding (left, at the scene) shared the news on her Instagram account, saying the traffic collision was the ‘craziest thing I’ve seen on the road’

The singer also posted to her story that she couldn't believe that people had been filming the incident instead of helping

She later posted an update: ‘On a side note, I can’t believe the first instinct of the other drivers who got out was to instantly start filming on their phones and shout abuse at the poor shocked driver, not even checking the other driver was OK. What on earth (sad face).’

The bizarre incident on December 16 caused the carriageway to grind to a halt and Transport for London reported a traffic jam close to Hangar Lane.

Royal Mail is still investigating the incident.

At the time, a spokesman said: ‘We are very concerned about this incident. We sincerely hope that no one was hurt. We are investigating as a matter of urgency.’
