Aberdeen postal workers mount picket lines as ‘summer’s biggest strike’ hits

Postal workers in Aberdeen formed picket lines outside depots across the city yesterday as the UK’s ‘biggest strike of the summer’ got under way.

More than 115,000 Royal Mail and 2,000 Post Office workers walked out yesterday amid pay disputes. The Communication Workers Union is demanding wage rises to match inflation, warning soaring costs are leaving staff struggling to get by.

Letters were not delivered yesterday while some customers faced delays for parcels. Similar disruption is expected on August 31, September 8 and September 9, when further Royal Mail walk-outs will be staged.

Post Office workers were staging their fourth day of industrial action in protest at having their wages for last year frozen. Meanwhile, the Royal Mail claims the CWU has rejected a pay offer ‘worth up to 5.5 per cent’.

Yesterday, pickets were mounted at Aberdeen’s Kittybrewster and Dyce delivery offices as well as the Altens Mail Centre. At those sites, workers from across the sector joined forces.

Alan Robertson, area supply chain representative for the Post Office at the CWU, told Aberdeen Live: “We were key workers during the pandemic.

“They’ve reaped the benefits of our work but they’re not willing to put some of that money into our pockets. We didn’t get a pay rise, but managers are getting a bonus off the back of us getting a pay freeze.

“This is our fourth day of strike action and we’re going to be out again on Tuesday. It’s frustrating.

“We just want to get this put to bed and get on with our jobs but it’s down to the Post Office to get to the negotiating table.”
