All homeowners urged to make one check – or risk rats ‘invading’

One thing nobody wants in their home is rats – but it can happen.

As well as being attracted by food sources, they can also find their way in through all sorts of gaps and holes. This is why it’s vital that all homeowners make a vital property check.

JP McHale Pest Management said all homeowners should make a simple check to ensure they limit the risk of the pesky rodents finding their way in. Completing a simple task could help send them on their way.

Essentially, the experts say people need to “plug their holes”. In a TikTok video, he said: “I’m talking about the electrical line that goes into the house over here.

“Any sort of holes around HVAC lines, pipes, conduits, cables – anything that goes from the outside to the inside. If it’s not sealed, it’s very, very easy for mice to get inside, and they will.”

He added: “In fact, mice only need the hole the size of a pencil to get into the house.”

As long as it’s safe to do so, any gaps or holes should be covered up where possible. If left open, rats can squeeze or chew their way into the property – and this is where big problems start to arise.

Natually, it’s important you don’t have anything like food hanging around which could attract them in the first place. It’s best to ensure items like this are stored away securely.

Then you need to look at ways to seal off any potential entry points. There are a few ways you can do this, and it’s easier than you think. You just need to follow a few simple rules.

How to prevent rats 

To try and stop rats from making their way inside, you need to block entry points, rid food and water sources and reduce any potential hiding places. Once you’ve examined your property for cracks, holes or gaps, you can work to fill them in.

It will depend on the area you’re working with, but materials people commonly use to do this include caulk, steel wool, hardware cloth or cement. Just do your research to work out which option may be best for you.

As well as holes and gaps, it’s also wise to ensure external vents are covered to limit the chance of the pests getting inside. As for doors, check if they have gaps under 5mm and seal them accordingly.

You could also trim any branches that touch your roof or gutters, as rats can actually climb trees and get onto the roof. Making it hard for them to do this will aid matters.
