All the strikes you need to know about this December

As workers right across the UK continue to fight for fairer pay amid the cost of living crisis, disruptions could be caused this month.

This year has already seen strike action from rail staff, Arriva bus drivers, factory workers, university staff and more as families struggle through a recession. As the cost of living increases, workers in a variety of trades are fighting for a pay that reflects that and the work they do.

As well as past strikes, ongoing strikes and future strikes, thousands more workers are set to be balloted to vote on strike action. From postal strikes to food delivery strikes, we have rounded up some key dates for this month.

The RMT union has announced strike action for rail staff which could significant impact services, from an overtime ban as well as national strike action from cleaners, people are urged to check before they travel. Eurostar security staff will also stage a walkout this month.

Wirral is also facing Christmas bin strikes as Biffa workouts stage strike action. Struggling Jacob’s staff also previously spoke out about how they will fight to the end as they picket outside the Aintree factory.

Key dates:

  • December 5: Members of the Fire Brigades Union start voting on strikes over pay.
  • December 7 and 8: Members of the Scottish Secondary Teachers Association and NASUWT will strike in Scotland.
  • December 9, 11, 14, 15, 23 and 24: More strikes by Royal Mail workers.
  • December 12: Strike ballot among members of the Royal College of Midwives and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy closes.
  • December 13/14: 48-hour strike by Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members on Network Rail and 14 train operators.
  • December 13/14: 48 hour strike by members of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) at Avanti West Coast and start of other forms of industrial action at other train companies and Network Rail.
  • December 13: Civil servants in the Public and Commercial Services union start a month of industrial action.
  • December 15: Members of the Royal College of Nursing strike.
  • December 16/17: Another 48-hour RMT strike.
  • December 16/17: Another 48 hour strike by TSSA members at Avanti West Coast.
  • December 16: RMT members working as security guards on Eurostar strike.
  • December 17: TSSA members at Avanti West Coast and c2c strike.
  • December 18: Another strike by Eurostar security staff.
  • December 18: RMT members on Network Rail and 14 train operators start overtime ban, until January 2.
  • December 20: Another strike by RCN members.
  • December 22/23: Another strike by Eurostar security staff.
  • December 22/23: Railway cleaners across the country in the RMT union strike.
  • December 31: Another railway cleaners’ strike.
  • January 3/4: Another 48-hour RMT strike.
  • January 6/7: Another 48-hour RMT strike.
  • January 9: Junior doctors start voting on strikes.
