Chalfant: Hughesville had first Rural Free Delivery route in state

In the mid-1800s, postal service in rural areas was limited. Small towns had post offices where mail was held to be picked up by patrons. Many small communities had a post office in conjunction with a neighborhood store or even in the postmaster’s home.
