Charles had ‘rebellious passion’ which could have led to a different life, expert claims

She said: “This drama club launched the careers of so many other leading comics, including John Cleese, Peter Cook, Stephen Fry and Jonathan Miller that a glittering career in comedy was almost a given to its members.”

Judi suggested that Charles could have made a lucrative career on the stage, later segueing into the passions we know him for now.

“If he had taken the usual trajectory from the Footlights and been able to follow his passion rather than the role of King, Charles would have been likely to have been involved in the ‘anarchic’ comedy shows of his era, like Monty Python and The Goodies,” Judi claimed.

“This would have led to more of a production role, although if we look at the careers of comedians like Stephen Fry, Bill Oddie and Michael Palin, the blend of comedic past and a move into TV shows about wildlife, travel or ecology would have been a very feasible option as well as a good fit with the man we know today.”
