Dumfries posties deliver for Dumfries and Galloway Standard Toy Appeal

Postal workers at the Royal Mail’s Dumfries sorting office in Great King Street have delivered a first-class service to the Standard’s Christmas toy appeal.

They filled a van with toys for all ages which will help us fill the agencies lists.

Led by Jamie Hughes, Ross Corbett, and Tony Trainor, the big-hearted postmen and women – unsung heroes who have worked tirelessly through the pandemic – donated toys or cash.

Ross said: “We have supported the appeal now for a number of years and this year we raised a fantastic £690 from staff, including local Romec staff, and also had various toys donated.”

As well as cash raised by the postmen and women at the depot, they also came up with a novel way to help. Throughout this year they invited the public to pop in and take home a book from their customer services desk in return for a donation towards this year’s appeal.

The posties also wanted to support local shops in Dumfries Town Centre and bought many of the toys from Toy Town, where staff gave them their discounts.

Royal Mail also gave £200 in vouchers which bought books from Waterstones.

Jamie said: “We love to support the Toy Appeal and know how much it is needed this year.

“With all the furlough and job losses we are aware that families are struggling this year. We didn’t want to see any local child miss out on a Christmas gift.

“We would like to thank everyone who donated and helped our appeal and a special mention to Royal Mail, and staff at Toytown and Waterstones in Dumfries.”

All collection points for toys for the Standard’s Toy Appeal closed yesterday and we’d like to say a huge thanks to all the stores involved and everyone who has donated.

Look out for our appeal finale feature to come in our Christmas edition.

■ The appeal is now closed for toy donations but you can make a cash donation into our bank account at the Bank of Scotland in Dumfries either in branch or online via your own bank or building society. The Standard Toy Appeal account number is 10856666 and the sort code is 80-22-60.
Our office is closed so please do not take toys there or post us donations.
