Easter Renfrewshire: Connor Going stars in Sunshine on Leith

An East Renfrewshire actor is to star in a major new stage revival of much-loved musical Sunshine on Leith.

Connor Going, who is also an accomplished pianist and singer, is one of two male leads in the production, which was originally staged at Dundee Rep in 2007 before being made into a feature film.

The run will open at Pitlochry Festival Theatre on Friday and continue until June 2, before transferring to Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre from June 7 to 18 and then returning to Pitlochry from June 24 until October 1.

It will be another impressive addition to the CV of 29-year-old Connor, who has performed at a number of famous concert and theatre venues, including London’s Royal Albert Hall and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.

Connor, who grew up in Giffnock, said: “The show is a welcome back to the main auditorium in Pitlochry, which has been shut down since the pandemic began.

“It will be an honour as well to get the chance to perform at the King’s as the last show before they go in for a massive two-year refurbishment.

“I think audiences will have a blast, as it is a home-grown piece of work, so we are going to try and send the theatre out on a high.

“It’s also an actor/musician production, so every ensemble member also plays an instrument and is playing in the band when we are not in a scene doing dialogue.”

Set to songs by The Proclaimers, the show follows Davy and Ally as they return from war overseas and face civilian life filled with new responsibilities.

Connor, who has been based in London for the past eight years, in between extensive travel for work, is also contemplating a long-term move back home.

“There is something really special about coming home,” he added. “I’ve moved my stuff temporarily back to my mum and dad’s in Giffnock and they are already booked up to see the show.

“It’ll be great having friends and family able to see me in something and not have to break the bank by going down to London.

“Previously, that was the place you had to be. It’s where all the auditions were happening and you could rub shoulders with the right people but, now, so much stuff is being done over Zoom, at least for initial meetings.”
