Freddy Blaydes picks up maiden Wimbledon win

Windermere’s Blaydes, 17, had never played at the All England Club previously and was handed a wildcard into the draw, where he took to court against Sweden’s Kevin Edengren.

And despite some early wobbles it was a near perfect debut for the teenager, who saw off his Swedish opponent 6-3 6-2 to reach the second round.

“It was amazing to be honest,” he said.

“My first time at Wimbledon, the crowd were really great and helped me through it. I was a bit nervous at the start, but I’m really happy I got through it.

“I’m happy with how I dealt with the nerves. I was always going to be nervous – it’s by far the biggest tournament I’ve ever played – but I just had to try and stay loose, really focus on my movement, keep swinging. I’m quite proud of that and I’m happy to be through to round two.

“It’s really special. I’ve been here before as a little kid but I’ve never played here. I’ve always dreamed of it – juniors might not be men’s, but hopefully I’ll play men’s one day! It was really cool.”

The 17-year-old will now gear up for his second round match, which will take place later this week.

And, after a couple of key absences in his supporting camp on Sunday, he is hoping for there to be a couple more familiar faces in the stands in round two.

Blaydes added: “I can’t wait, especially now I’ve played that match and got a feel for it.

“I had my coach with me, my dad and my uncle. My brother’s playing another tournament and my mum’s with him, so they couldn’t be here – but hopefully they get a chance to see me in the next round.”
