Free food and drinks were given out by the owners of The Royal Oak pub in Handsworth as a tribute to Punjabi hip hop star Sidhu Moose Wala on the one year anniversary of his death.
The global icon was shot dead on May 29, 2022, in the village on Mansa in Punjab and the news of his death shook his fans worldwide. Yesterday, an event was held in his name where food was made on site and distributed to people visiting the pub and to passers by. Sidhu Moose Wala ‘s songs were playing the whole time and many gathered to mark the occasion.
The pub recently unveiled a mural dedicated to Sidhu, along with a yellow and red HMT 5911 tractor which was his favourite and often featured in his songs.
We spoke with owner Amrik Singh, who said: “I’ve had the chance to meet Sidhu Moose Wala when he came here for his first show, he came to Four Ways, a pub in Oldbury and he was very down to earth. I’ve always been a big fan, I listen to his songs all the time and when he died I really wanted to do something to pay tribute to him and we came up with the idea to showcase a tractor, something that symbolises our Punjabi roots and something that Sidhu often channelled with his music.”
Holyhead councillor Rinkal Shergill also attended the event and said that Sidhu’s parents have still not got justice. Speaking to Birmingham Live she said: “I’m here in Holyhead today at The Royal Oak to pay tribute to Sidhu Moose Wala. It’s been exactly one year today and his parents have still not had justice, even though Sidhu’s dad served in the Indian army.

“27 arrests have been made but we haven’t got the person who killed Sidhu Moose Wala, it’s a very emotional time for the local community, not only for the Punjabi community but for all. He was an international singer with so many fans. I’m here with pub owner Amrik Singh, who is a very humble person and is always helping the local community. He’s giving out free food today, serving food not only to the people coming to the pub but also on the road.”
Wednesbury South Ward Cllr Jenny Chidley added: “It’s a fantastic turnout. It’s the one year anniversary for Sidhu Moose Wala and we’re here at The Royal Oak. People are very generous here, they’re stopping everybody in the cars and buses giving away free food which is a lovely gesture. They’re all enjoying themselves.”
Another team member mentioned: “It’s beautiful to see this community spirit, a lot of people have gotten together today. There’s food, drinks which are being offered to passers by and it’s just an amazing atmosphere. Sidhu was an amazing person and I hope his soul is in peace. People have come all the way from Spain here to attend this event.”
