Gridlocked Somerset village grinds to halt again following crash

Motorists in Yatton faced gridlock once again after a crash on a busy road through the village. Emergency crews were called yesterday afternoon (June 5) to a crash near the North End roundabout.

Two cars were involved in the collision. All occupants managed to get out of the vehicles unaided, suffering minor injuries.

Specialist pads were put on the road to mop up oil leaking from the vehicles. The accident caused gridlock in the village while emergency crews were on scene with motorists using narrow lanes across the moors as a diversion.

Traffic also backed up through the village and along the High Street. Crews from Clevedon Fire Station were called to the incident while on a weekly drill night. A spokesman for Clevedon Firefighters said: “Our weekly drill night was interrupted to attend a road traffic collision (RTC) in Yatton. All occupants were able to exit the vehicles unaided.

“Crews provided first aid until arrival of South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust. Luckily there were only minor injuries.

“Both vehicles were made safe and absorbent pads put down on leaking oil.” The accident comes at the same time as the village is already suffering regular gridlock due to work to implement a safety scheme in the High Street. Fed up residents are now calling for work to be suspended – due to the chaos it is causing.”

Locals say the work through the congested village, which began in March, is causing traffic misery for residents, businesses and commuters. As well as traffic regularly backing up through the High Street, there have also been numerous traffic light failures, causing gridlock.

Members of the Yatton High Street Scrutiny Group have now written to North Somerset Council asking it to suspend the roadworks after the current section is completed and carry out an urgent review of the scheme.
