These throwback pics show many of the friendly faces who cared for Hull residents in the ’80s
Today is ‘999 Day’ – an annual celebration of our emergency services and NHS.
To mark the occasion, we’ve picked out a selection of fascinating flashback images offering a glimpse into life at Hull Royal Infirmary in the 1980s. For anyone who worked in the hospital during this decade, or perhaps was a frequent patient, this pictures are likely to elicit plenty of memories.
Built to replace the old Hull Royal Infirmary on Prospect Street, whose time to practice modern medicine had passed, the new building was opened in June 1967 by Queen Elizabeth II. The ‘new’ Hull Royal Infirmary was built on the site of the former Western General Hospital on Anlaby Road, and it offered state-of-the-art medicine within a modern environment, designed to offer treatment on a huge scale.

Hull Live’s archives uncovered a number of photos of Hull Royal Infirmary’s staff, nurses, doctors, patients and those who supported the hospital and its aims through charitable endeavours. As well as doctors, nurses and patients, this collection of images also features hospital radio presenters and kitchen staff from this era.
