Industrial action ‘short of strike’ at Royal Mail suspended ahead of vote on new offer

Industrial action by Royal Mail managers which was set to start tomorrow (Friday, July 15) has been suspended. Staff who are members of the Unite union were poised to work to rule until July 19 amid a dispute over jobs and pay.

However, members will now be balloted in the next few days on proposals aimed at resolving the row. A planned strike next week remains on, dependent on the outcome of the vote.

Unite said its senior reps had agreed to put the proposals from Royal Mail to a ballot of the membership. “In order to do this the planned action short of a strike due to commence tomorrow at 6am has been suspended,” a statement from the union said.

“The ballot will open tomorrow morning and close on July 18. No decision has been taken regarding the notice for strike action for July 20-22.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said the company was “pleased” with the latest development. “Following collaboration with Unite, they have decided to suspend their planned work to rule industrial action and will now ballot their members with a recommendation to call off all planned industrial action,” they said.
