King Charles’ true feelings over Royal Ascot after ‘disappointment’

King Charles and Queen Camilla have been powering through the scorching weather, showing their dedication to Royal Ascot despite a somewhat “disappointing” start. It’s been a Royal affair at the prestigious Berkshire event as Prince William made an appearance on Thursday, as Princess Anne, Zara Tindall, Princess Beatrice, and Duchess Sophie also gracing the races with their presence.

Despite undergoing weekly cancer treatments, the King was reportedly radiant with joy at Ascot this week. Heat wave warnings have been issued with temperatures expected to hit 30°C today, but he plans to return to the races, says the Daily Mail.

Beyond the social enjoyments, experts note that King Charles has a “serious” motive behind his Royal Ascot presence. He recognises the race meeting’s significance for both Britain’s horse-racing industry and its appeal as an international tourist destination.

The Daily Mail’s Royal Editor Rebecca English shared insights on the matter: “There has been a serious side to the King’s attendance: both he and his wife, Queen Camilla, feel strongly that Royal Ascot is an important showcase for both the British racing industry and the UK as a global tourist attraction, more generally.”

While King Charles might be relishing his time at Ascot, his equine competitors haven’t mirrored his success. The monarch, passionate about horse racing, must be feeling let down as all his horses have yet to secure a win.

Ascot Racecourse, established by Queen Anne in 1711, has become a global hub for horse racing aficionados. Initially intended as a space where horses could showcase their full speed, the inaugural Her Majesty’s Plate allowed any horse over six to compete.

Featuring only seven runners initially, these early races had three heats, each a gruelling four miles in length, testing the utmost endurance of competing steeds.

Thirteen reigns later, Ascot has soared in prestige, now welcoming international guests and broadcasting across more than 180 nations.

Will Aitkenhead, an Ascot representative, expressed to the Daily Mail the immense Royal support: “The support of the Royal Family for the meeting is incredible. People really look forward to seeing them here.

“Sometimes they have runners on the day and sometimes they are just here to support the industry, but either way they are an intrinsic part of the day.”

Horse riding is deeply woven into the fabric of Royal tradition, with the late Queen Elizabeth famously enjoying the sport.

Princess Anne and her daughter Zara Tindall share this equestrian zeal, both securing Olympic medals – Anne with her gold and silver, and Zara clinching team silver in London 2012.

Last year saw The King and Queen take up the mantle of patronage within The Jockey Club. At the announcement, Sandy Dudgeon, Senior Steward, heralded their contributions: “They have shown great enthusiasm and support for equestrian sports over many years and everyone in racing in Britain and overseas was thrilled to see them enjoy success at Royal Ascot last year.”
