The Phantom Faeces Flinger of Sandleford

One of the people who walks their dog from Warren Road to Sandleford goes to the trouble of picking up their dog’s poo in a bag, but then flings it into the bushes on their way home, leaving the hedge and fence festooned with coloured bags of doggie do-do.

Bags of dog poo are being left in Sandleford

I’m hoping that one of the readers of your pages will unmask the culprit or even simply persuade them to kick their unsightly and unhygienic habit.

Little hope of action from Thames Water

While I am glad to see Laura Farris getting her marigolds on in the fight with Thames Water over poisoning the River Lambourn, I don’t hold out any hope of imminent action.

Especially as the Environment Agency wants Thames to come up with a plan and to learn from this incident.

You wonder what a water company’s very reason for existence is if not to have a plan to avoid poisoning its customers’ environment.

Thames would also like a 40 per cent increase in our bills to implement all its future plans, having given copious dividends to its shareholders over the years.

I no longer swim in the seas round this country and I certainly wouldn’t jump in any of its rivers if wanted to remain healthy.

It is an utter tragedy and above all, tale of greed and incompetence what our water companies have been allowed to get away with, but perhaps Laura could explain in one of her op-eds how lack of oversight of these monopolies over the last 14 years has brought us to this state of affairs.

Alternatively, we could just flush this useless excuse for a Government down the pan in a few months.

Appalled by the state of Camp Hopson car park

Surely I can’t be the only one to notice the collapse in upkeep of Camp Hopson’s car park.

It’s a disgrace, with lots of unsightly rubbish and a failure to maintain the shrubs and plants.

I sent the manager a letter, but so far no response or even an acknowledgement.

This is supposed to be the ‘flagship’ Newbury department store.

I’m appalled.

Heartfelt best wishes to Princess Kate

As chairman of West Berkshire Council, I would like to express our councillors’ and community’s support, respect and heartfelt best wishes for a cherished local girl Kate, the Princess of Wales.

The admirable strength and resilience that the princess has shown, especially with her recent challenging diagnoses is a shining example to us all .

I am confident that the Princess of Wales will continue to inspire us all with her compassion, kindness and commitment to the British public.

We can all reduce our own carbon footprint

Several recent letters to this page have highlighted the inconsistencies in the UK’s attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and many of us will probably agree with at least some of the points raised.

However, it is important we don’t lose sight of the underlying principle – the world needs to halve emissions by 2030, halve them again by 2040, halve them again by 2050, and offset the remaining emissions – to continue being a relatively safe place for us to live in.

We can all play a part in this.

For example, by estimating what our own carbon footprint is using the WWF footprint calculator (or similar), and planning how we can halve this by 2030.

I reduced my carbon footprint from about 14 tonnes (the average for my postcode) in 2019 to about seven tonnes in 2023, and in the process have a healthier diet, a warmer home and lower household bills.

I also hope to help others do the same.

Why did the Royal Mail not deliver my letter?

I would like to know what right has the Royal Mail at Swindon got to decide what letters to send out.

On February 28 I put a first class stamp on my envelope, but I had to bend the stamp a little bit as I had left it a bit tight to put on.

When I went to post it at Newbury Post Office I asked if it was okay and was told, ‘yes, you haven’t damaged the stamp.

Eighteen days on I got nothing so I contacted the supplier and was told they didn’t get the letter.

It was to Healthy Living at Driffield.

I do all my correspondence with pen and paper with a stamp on it.

When one makes a phone call your money is wasted while they tell you all about the web, which I don’t have.
