Police were called to a Birmingham school this afternoon after it was understood to have gone into lockdown amid an intruder alert.

Parents gathered outside Fairfax School in Sutton Coldfield after it was understood they were sent a message alerting them to an incident.

The details were not immediately confirmed.

Our reporter is at the scene and said students and parents were waiting at the Fairfax Road gate, waiting for their friends and children to come out.

We have contacted West Midlands Police for comment.

Royal Mail van prevented from entering the site during incident

Our reporter has said that a teacher and a police officer were stationed at the school gate as children were being allowed out..

Cars queued in the street as parents waited outside for the pupils.

No cars were allowed into the school campus including a Royal Mail van.

Children were said to have been escorted following unconfirmed ‘reports of an intruder’

A message was said to have been received by a parent this afternoon which read:

“Please be aware that we have an intruder on site.

“To keep students safe the school has gone into lockdown.

“Police are in attendance. More information to follow.”

Followed by another message which said:

“Students will be escorted out gradually very shortly. Thank you for your understanding.”

Police van and car at Fairfax school

A police car and a van was present at the school at the height of the incident which was at the day.

A message was sent to parents concerning a reported ‘intruder alert’.

We have tried contacting Fairfax School.

We are awaiting a comment from West Midlands Police and will bring you that as soon as we get it.

Stressed parents hugged their children

Our reporter said he has seen stressed parents giving their children hugs as they went to collect them.

He said they were coming out of the entrance on Farifax Road side and were worried.

They did not expect to get a message like this on the last day of term.

The pupils are in their own clothes for dress down day – the last day of term.

Our reporter has just speoken to a parent. The father said his son has come out but his daughter is in the school.

He said ‘I received the message and was due to go with my son to the cinema.

“But I’m waiting for my daughter.

“The same thing happened last year.’
