Mail plane lands in Jersey for last time

HISTORY was made on Friday morning as the mail plane touched down in Jersey for the last time.

Royal Mail made the decision last month, following a consultation, to scrap the daily service, meaning that all inbound and outbound mail will now be carried by the existing ferry service.

The postal operator argued that there would be minimal disruption to customers as most items, including Amazon parcels, were already delivered by ferry, and labelled the change as ‘a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly’ option.

However, concerns were raised by some businesses that local retailers could be hit, while a petition calling for the service to be continued, stemming from fears that its cessation would hamper the Island’s economy, infrastructure and connectivity, garnered more than 1,500 signatures.

The first regular mail service landed in Jersey in 1937.
