Medical director at Royal Oldham to step down

The medical director of The Royal Oldham Hospital is stepping down.

Dr Chris Brookes, who is the chief medical officer at the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) which runs hospital and community services in Oldham as well as Bury, Rochdale and Salford, is retiring this month.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the NCA said: “Dr Chris Brookes announced his plans to retire as chief medical officer earlier this year.

“He chose to retire from the NCA in December 2022 to enable him to take up a role with a rugby league club, whose season starts in January 2023.”

According to the NCA website, Dr Brookes started as an executive medical director at Salford Royal Hospital in 2010 while continuing to practise as a senior consultant in the emergency department.

In January 2017, he was appointed chief medical officer for the Committees in Common for The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (PAT) and Salford Royal, in addition to his post as executive medical director for Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

In April 2019, he was appointed chief medical officer/deputy chief executive for Group Committees in Common and Salford Royal Foundation Trust Board of directors.

Away from the hospital, Dr Brookes provides medical care to the Wigan Warriors and England rugby league teams.
