MP calls for urgent postal improvements after Royal Mail £21m fine

An MP has called for urgent action to improve postal services after Royal Mail was fined £21 million.

Chris Ward, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, made the call after Ofcom fined Royal Mail for failing to meet its delivery targets.

The postal service was found to have breached its obligations to deliver letters on time, leaving millions of households across the UK with unreliable or delayed post.

Mr Ward said the fine “reflects exactly what residents across Saltdean, Rottingdean, and other parts of my constituency have been experiencing for far too long.”

“This fine confirms what so many of my constituents have been telling me — the postal service is simply not working as it should.

“People in Saltdean and Rottingdean have faced constant delays, missed letters, and parcels arriving weeks late.”

The MP said fines were not enough to fix the problem, and called for “investment, staff support and proper accountability.”

Royal Mail has blamed staff shortages and an increase in parcels for the delivery failures, but Mr Ward said these excuses no longer hold up.

He said: “Royal Mail provides an essential public service, not a luxury.

“From medical letters to bills and birthday cards — these are lifelines for people.

“If a private company can’t meet its basic obligations, it’s time for real scrutiny of how it’s being run and how we ensure communities like ours are not left behind.”

Mr Ward is writing to Royal Mail to demand a detailed plan to improve delivery performance in Saltdean, Rottingdean and across the Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven constituency, as well as engagement with affected residents.

He said: “I’ll keep pressing until we see real improvements.

“My constituents deserve a postal service that works — and I’ll be holding Royal Mail to their word.”
