Mystery Crochet Post Box Toppers – Maddalena Pizzingrilli

Londoners mystified as to who’s been making these crochet covers on red Royal Mail letter boxes.

Since the start of the national lockdown in 2020 many of us have taken up various hobbies to pass the time; some being more unique than others. One, specifically, is crochet. A stereotypically ‘old-fashioned’ craft has turned out to be a modern-day mystery providing a source of brightness, joy, and inspiration for those that pass by these decorative ‘hats’ sat upon red post boxes.

Lately, we have seen an increase in the amount of Royal Mail letter boxes that have been upgraded with a colourful crochet cover of many different designs, from festive celebrations, and cute scenes, to important memorable days of the year, sparking conversation and awareness of issues found in society today. These have had a massive impact on many residents of London, including a young woman (Shaan Malle) who said, ‘It’s really uplifting to walk down the streets and see a new design that’s been made each week. I feel that it has had a very positive impact on our community during these challenging times, putting a smile on many faces.’ Others have commented on how ‘beautiful’, ‘amazing’ and ‘thoughtful’ the covers have been, in the ways in which they have brightened the city while simultaneously shining light on current affairs.

Have you seen them on top of your local letterbox?

Over the past year more of these woollen toppers have been popping up all over London, spanning across: Hounslow, Isleworth, Northwood, Ruislip, Ealing, and Twickenham.

However, the details about the identity of the artist creating these radiant and eye-catching ‘hats’ is still a bit woolly…

Since the surge in these crochet toppers, many people have taken to social media to share what they know about these crochet hats and any updates on the mystery crochet artist. Nevertheless, there have not been many advances as to solving this cryptic crochet puzzle, however it doesn’t look like people are going to stop their search.

Despite that we are no further to solving this web of tangled wool, it is clear to see that these toppers should be carried on into the future, making our city a more inviting and inclusive environment to attract more uplifting energy into our lives.
