PEEBLES is reduced to its main Eastgate Post Office after a sub-branch shut for good this week.
The kiosk, within the Adam Purves Company community store in Glen Road, accepted its last business at Tuesday lunchtime.
Peebles Community Council member Anne Snoddy told its meeting last week that after not hearing from the Post Office she had asked for information in the convenience shop.
Ms Snoddy said: “I went into the shop and asked in the good old fashioned way, and it is a permanent closure.”
The convenience shop will remain open and it is just the sub-post office business which is closing.
Community council chairman Les Turnbull said: “I guess then, unless there are other premises, and I can’t think of any on that side of the river, we will be losing that post office.
“I’m not sure there is very much we can do about that.”
Newly-elected Tweeddale East councillor Julie Pirone said: “I would quite like to write to the Post Office myself and ask them what’s happening.
“I will declare a little bit of an interest here, I used to be the director of external relations for Royal Mail and the Post Office and I finished in that role in 2019.
“I would like to write to them because they do have a policy that if a post office closes they should try and re-open it or find a solution. It suggests to me that the sub-postmaster they have doesn’t want to continue.
“The Post Office should find someone else to take over that service even in another shop.
“I will take that away as an action, it will take them some time to answer me, I suspect.”
