Police arrest Royal Ascot festivalgoer after thinking she planned to glue herself to a fence

Police arrested a woman at the Royal Ascot after thinking she was planning to stage a protest at the horse racing festival.

Two officers were pictured escorting a racegoer in handcuffs this morning before the first of today’s races at 2:30pm had even begun.

Thames Valley police said they arrested the woman on suspicion of being equipped with intent to lock on using some glue which she was carrying.

But she was soon de-arrested after officers realised that this was nail glue for her false nails and she was not intending to commit any offence.

The woman, who can be seen wearing a yellow floral summer dress, a black fascinator hat and black wedge heels, was pictured earlier this morning beside two police officers, with one carrying a medic bag.

The photo was taken as hundreds of eager race fans poured onto the course on the second day of the festival, which runs until June 24.

This comes as activist group Animal Rising announced earlier this week it would not be targetting the horse racing festival.

The group said it would not cause disruption at this week’s proceedings and that they will instead choose ‘to spotlight the Greyhound racing industry’ at the English Greyhound Derby at Towcester on July 1.

It added that horseracing and greyhound racing are ‘two sides of the same coin’ and that they will continue to stage protests to continue the ‘national conversation about our broken relationship with other animals and nature’.

Animal Rising have already staged protests against harming animals at four high-profile horse racing events this year, including the Epsom Derby and Grand National races.

Police arrested 118 people at this year’s Grand National on April 15 after protestors delayed the start of the race, while more than 30 protestors were arrested at last month’s Derby.

Robert Gordon, 26, a spokesperson for the group said: ‘We are immensely disappointed to see the horseracing industry shy away from an honest offer of a televised debate to put their case to the court of public opinion.

‘From research that the British Horseracing Authority commissioned themselves we know at least 20% of Britons do not support the use of horses for sport.

‘Nevertheless, we’ve seen a definitive shift in public opinion with 54% of us saying we find the Grand National cruel.

‘Animal Rising will be taking action at the English Greyhound Derby on July 1st to keep the spotlight on animals.

‘Whether it’s with greyhounds, horses, or those on farms across the country, it is clear we need to imagine a new connection with other animals and nature. Doing so is at the heart of tackling our climate and nature crises.’

Yesterday, pictures also captured a number of revellers looking a bit worse for wear as the first day of the festival wrapped up.

Racegoers dressed in all their finery were spotted stocking up on evening snacks, taking some time out with a cigarette and having a little lie-down on the pavement.

However for some, the party looked set to go on all night as they were spotted carrying drinks as the sun set on the Berkshire racecourse.

Some well-dressed ladies among the stylish guests were spotted taking a stoop on the kerb to change out of their heels and into their flat shoes before making the journey back home.

And for one reveller, the walk back home was a little too much to bear – so her strapping pal instead hurled her over his shoulders.

The exhausted revellers made their way home after a thrilling first day of Royal Ascot 2023, where racegoers put their best feet forward in stunning outfits to enjoy the day.

And the festival was given the royal touch as members of the royal family arrived and took part in a procession in King Charles’s first as Monarch.
