Postal strikes to continue as 31 delivery offices across region return to picket line

Leicestershire’s postal workers are set to be a part of 115,000 striking across the UK – with 31 offices heading to picket lines in the region. All of Leicestershire’s delivery offices and the one office in Rutland will see their workers take a stand for a “dignified, proper pay rise” as part of an ongoing pay dispute with Royal Mail.

The strike will be held by members of the Communication Workers Union – which represents employees from the Royal Mail Group – and will be in place for all of Thursday. This is just one of many days of industrial action from the CWU as they try to get an improvement on the 2 per cent pay rise offered by senior management earlier this year.

The decision to strike was made after a union ballot for strike action saw members vote by 97.6 per cent with a 77 per cent turnout. Those striking will include the Leicester Distribution Centre at Centurion Way, as well as smaller delivery offices across the county, including one at Oakham in Rutland.

CWU General Secretary Dave Ward said: “There can be no doubt that postal workers are completely united in their determination to secure the dignified, proper pay rise they deserve.

“When Royal Mail bosses are raking in £758 million in profit and shareholders pocketing in excess of £400 million, our members won’t accept pleads of poverty from the company.

“Postal workers won’t meekly accept their living standards being hammered like this any longer, and the leadership of Royal Mail must recognise this sooner rather than later.

“Our members deserve a pay rise that rewards their fantastic achievements in keeping the country connected during the pandemic, but also helps them keep up during this current economic crisis.

“We won’t be backing down until we get just that.”
