Royal Mail pricing probe unsettles industry

Communications regulator Ofcom announced plans to probe the prices of recently-privatized Royal Mail, news that sparked uncertainty in the postal industry, say reports.

Royal Mail warned that the investigation will likely lead to time of insecurity over Royal Mail prices charged to postal operators, as Ofcom’s probe could last up to two years. The investigation was launched following a complaint by Royal Mail’s closest rival and second-place operator TNT Post filed last February.

TNT reportedly lodged complaints regarding Royal Mail’s price hikes for mail delivery sorted and collected by competitors. Those price hikes have now been suspended, Royal Mail said.

The two have feuded recently as Royal Mail voiced opposition against TNT’s new delivery network, which Royal Mail says will threaten its own service. The postal company is now seeking protection from Ofcom against the competition.
