Royal Mail, Sainsbury’s, Argos, Waitrose and John Lewis are looking for Christmas temps

We may be in the midst of a heatwave but that doesn’t stop retailers gearing up for the festive season. Royal Mail, Sainsbury’s, Argos, Waitrose and John Lewis have launched their Christmas temps recruitment process.

There are thousands of jobs up for grabs across lots of different departments.

Royal Mail is recruiting all over the nation, with jobs from Edinburgh to London on offer. At the minute the jobs page is only advertising 27 roles, but on September 13 the postal service will be adding even more vacancies.

A spokesperson says: “Our seasonal workers are critical members of our team and we’re always looking for more talented people to join us. Whether you’re looking for flexible hours all year or to earn some extra money for Christmas, we have plenty of great opportunities.

“Our application process is simpler than ever before, and we’re committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone who walks through our doors.” View jobs here.

The John Lewis Group, which owns its namesake department store chain and Waitrose supermarkets is recruiting 10,000 people. There are 2,900 temporary roles in sales and merchandising positions across 34 John Lewis stores and Waitrose is hiring 2,800 seasonal roles across 329 shops.

The group is also recruiting 2,700 festive roles in its supply chain through recruitment agencies. In addition to these seasonal jobs, the group said it will be hiring for 1,700 further positions across both Waitrose and John Lewis in a variety of areas over the coming months.

Lisa Cherry, executive director, people, at JLP, said: “We’re hugely proud of the way our two brands have become part of the excitement that surrounds Christmas and this is a great opportunity to be at the heart of that at such a special time. Our customers are at the forefront of everything we do; we want to deliver a great festive season for them with inspirational products and the very best customer service courtesy of our brilliant partners.” You can apply here.

Elsewhere, Sainsbury’s is looking for 18,000 temps. 15,000 roles have been created at Sainsbury’s, 2,000 roles at Argos and 1,000 in logistics. The new staff will help throughout Sainsbury’s and Argos stores, serving customers, keeping shelves stocked and picking, packing and delivering online orders.

Angie Risley, Group HR Director at Sainsbury’s said: “We are really excited to be able to welcome an additional 18,000 colleagues to our team to ensure we deliver the best possible service to our customers this Christmas. It is a special time of year but it’s also busy, and with more customers returning to do more of their shopping in-store, this investment in service will ensure customers can find whatever they need to celebrate this year easily and conveniently.

“We know how tough it is for households right now and as well as excellent value for customers we are committed to leading colleague pay. Our new higher base rate, colleague discount and free food during shifts ensures colleagues will be well-rewarded for their hard work.” You can apply here.
