Royal Mail has seen domestic and international parcel volumes surge by a combined 38% year on year in the first quarter (three months to 28 June).
Domestic parcels grew by 64%, excluding those parcels delivered for Amazon. Letter mail fell by 33%, a drop of 788m fewer pieces.
GLS, Royal Mail’s international parcel network say volumes grow by 22%. Business to consumer (B2C) and e-commerce drove this growth.
The company added: “As the UK starts to come out of lockdown, we are no seeing any change as yet in customer behaviour. Our customers are wanting more parcels delivered to their homes and are sending fewer letters. We are working as quickly as we can to adapt our business to meet our customer needs. Advertising mail in Royal Mail continues to be impacted by GDP and low levels of business activity.”
