Six coronavirus deaths across Birmingham and Midlands as UK toll rises by 87

The UK coronavirus death toll has risen by 87 today – including more Covid-19 deaths in Birmingham and the Midlands.

There were two deaths at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust.

There was one death at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust respectively.

As well as Walsall, there was a death in Wolverhampton, at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.

There was a further Midlands death at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.

This makes it six deaths across the Midlands today, with England recording the vast majority of the UK’s 87 deaths.

Scotland recorded six deaths of confirmed coronavirus patients in the past 24 hours, according to the latest Covid-19 statistics.

This takes the total under this measure – patients who died within 28 days of first testing positive – to 2,550 since the start of the outbreak.

The Scottish Government figures show 1,009 new coronavirus cases were recorded during the same period – down from Friday’s record high of 1,246 new infections.

This represents 14.1% of newly-tested individuals, down from 16.2% on Friday.

Of the new cases, 357 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 204 in Lanarkshire and 160 in Lothian.

A total of 38,042 people have now tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up from 37,033 on Friday.

There are 432 patients in hospital confirmed to have the virus, 35 higher than Friday’s 397 patients.

Of these patients, 34 were in intensive care, up by three from the revised figure on Friday.

Another 902 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Northern Ireland.

No new deaths were reported.

A total of 134 patients are in hospital. Nineteen are in intensive care and 11 of those are ventilated, the Department of Health said.
