  • The Spanish royal family have released their sophisticated Christmas cards
  • King Felipe and Queen Letizia chose a family photo with their daughters

  • Their grandparents King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia sent their own card

Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia steal the spotlight in the Spanish royal family’s annual Christmas card.

The sisters are pictured with parents King Felipe, 51, and Queen Letizia, 47, in a family photo, which was taken on a visit to the village of Asiegu, in northern Spain, in October.

In a sign of their growing maturity, heir-to-the throne Leonor, 14, and 12-year-old Sofia both signed their own names inside the card.

Their grandparents King Carlos I and Queen Sofia, both 81, sent a separate Christmas card, which was also unveiled today.

Felipe and Letizia are both known for their sophisticated, classic style and took a similar approach when it came to designing their card.

The candid snap shows the whole family wearing trench coats, with Felipe in black, Letizia in navy and the two girls in matching beige.

The message on the front simply indicates where the photo was taken – at an annual award recognising the ‘best’ town in the Asturias region of Spain.

The area holds particular significance as Leonor’s official royal title is Princess of Asturias.

The message inside is in both English and Spanish and reads: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2020.

All four family members signed their own names below, with the girls adding their formal titles beneath their signatures.

Juan Carlos and Sofia’s card is even more pared back. It carries no message on the front, only a recent photo of the couple.
