Teenage arsonist sentenced over Whitchurch police vandalism

The 17-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a nine-month youth offender contract after pleading guilty to one count of arson and five counts of criminal damage.

These included vandalising a marked police vehicle with offensive words and markings on two separate occasions between March 11 and 24 while it was parked at Whitchurch Police Station.

She also twice vandalised the skate area of Jubilee Park, and spray-painted offensive markings on the external walls of the Royal Mail sorting office in Rosemary Lane.

CCTV footage identified the girl at the scene for the five incidents, and she was arrested on March 25.

She was then further arrested on suspicion of arson on April 29 after a bin was set on fire in Jubilee Park and was later charged with all the offences.

The teen was given the nine-month youth offender contract at Telford Youth Court on Tuesday (June 10).

Sergeant Liam Heathcote, from North Shropshire’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “We’re pleased to see the court has handed out the youth offender contract.

“Failing to abide by the contract may result in her being brought back to court to face an alternative sentence.

“Criminal damage and other forms of anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in our community, and we will always seek to bring offenders before the courts.”

The girl was also ordered to pay £26 in victim surcharges.
