A touching note sent by the late Queen to the Prince of Wales at Christmas has gone viral online.

Royal fan account Real Royal Mail shared a snap of the letter on Twitter earlier today, writing: ‘A card written in the hand of #QueenElizabethII and sent to the young #PrinceWilliam obviously along with an advent calendar. It was purchased from a former employee of #PrincessDiana.’

The undated note, which appeared to have been handwritten by the late royal on Buckingham Palace stationery, read: ‘”William, I hope you enjoy opening this each day, Granny”.’

Royal fans quickly went wild over the note online, with one writing: ‘Aww how lovely, beautiful, precious memory to treasure.’

Meanwhile another wrote: ‘Aww the sweetest thing.’

A third added: ‘Aw I have never seen this! They had such a lovely relationship.’

The note went up for auction in December 2016, where it was expected to fetch up to £1,400.

At the time, Robert Livingston, executive VP at Boston-based RR Auction, called it ‘a seldom-encountered piece of correspondence from within the royal family, enhanced by its fitting Christmas time association’.

The image emerged online as a royal expert said the Prince of Wales is ‘shielding’ Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis from his grief over the Queen’s passing.

Royal correspondent Jennie Bond – who has written four biographies on The Queen – has insisted Kate and William, both 40, will spend some quality time with their children over the next two weeks following a period of enormous change.

Shortly before the Queen passed away at the age of 96 on 8 September, the Wales family moved from their Kensington Palace residence to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate to reportedly be closer to Her Majesty.

When news of The Queen’s death broke last month, Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four, had just finished their first day of their new £21k-a-year prep school Lambrook – situated near Ascot racecourse.

Speaking to OK! magazine, the expert claimed the Princess of Wales wants to make this school break ‘as normal as possible’ for the children.

Jennie explained: ‘After their great-granny’s passing, William and Catherine will try to move things on as quickly as possible and not dwell too much on the sadness of the last couple of months.’

The expert predicts that the Wales family will spend the next weeks ‘settling into’ their new home and focusing on family time.

The family will be enjoying getting outdoors for cycling and horse riding and dog walks and ‘recharging their batteries after a very difficult first half-term for the children’.

Describing how they might spend some quality time together, Jennie said the children might bring some of their school activities home with them – such as ‘mini Masterchef’ competitions and trampolining.

What’s more, the expert said Prince William will have made an attempt to protect his children from his grief over the loss of his beloved grandmother.

She added: ‘Even though William will undoubtedly have moments where he feels very sad, he will try to shield the children from it.’
