Would city welcome Wilko to high street? Store provides statement

The Argus recently reported it is soon to be two years since Debenhams in Churchill Square closed its doors for the final time.

Since the story, readers have been suggesting which brand should move into the two-storey space, with one retailer proving to be a popular recommendation.

Found in many towns and cities around the country, value department brand Wilko has so far remained absent in Brighton and Hove with the nearest stores being Burgess Hill, Eastbourne and Worthing.

One reader said: “Wilko would be great in there, it’s what Brighton should have.”

But as the nearest stores are around ten miles away, we contacted Wilko to find out if we can expect to see a site in the city soon.

“We have no current plans to open a store in Brighton, but welcome customer feedback and suggestions for store locations,” said a Wilko spokesman.

And so, to the disappointment of some of our readers, the dream is over for now and the question on what will happen to the former Debenhams store remains open.
